The Canadian Auto Workers Association is notorious for being the largest private sector union in Canada. It has representatives in all the leading economic sectors in the country, including the auto manufacturing, electrical, mining, and railway industries. Formed in 1985, CAW has successfully bargained for better wages, benefits, and pensions. CAW responds to employers’ lack of security at a time where the costs and standards of living continue to increase substantially. Additionally, CAW provides members with valuable knowledge regarding on-site safety, women’s rights issues, and worker compensation programs.

An impressive achievement of the Canadian Auto Workers Association is its agreements with the Big Three automobile manufacturers since 1996. The CAW has bargained successfully with these companies regarding outsourcing, work times, and labor conditions. Its talks with industry leaders have entitled any member of the CAW who is also employed at General Motors of Canada Ltd., Ford Motor Company of Canada Limited, or Daimler Chrysler Canada Inc. to health benefits and discounted automobile purchases.

With a possibly unstable automotive industry, it is imperative that the Canadian Auto Workers Association protect Canada’s employees. CAW’s ongoing commitment to economic and social justice in the workplace will protect many employees in years to come.
